Skin imperfections: from adolescence to adulthood, a daily burden

This condition, more pronounced in adolescence, also affects adults. It can be caused by hormonal fluctuations, medication, profuse sweating, the use of cosmetics unsuitable for the skin, poor lifestyle habits, etc. Skin imperfections, although generally not serious, have a major impact on quality of life and self-image, whether you're a teenager or an adult.

Sebaceous Gland Obstruction and Types of Acne

Sebaceous glands are glands in the dermis, attached to the hair follicle, which secrete sebum. This natural substance moisturizes the skin, protects it from certain bacteria and lubricates the hairs.

When the sebaceous glands are blocked by impurities, oily secretions, dead cells and pimples form and become infected:

-Microcysts: When sebum can no longer flow normally from the sebaceous duct, a small bump forms under the skin, the center of which looks like a white dot.

-Blackheads: These can measure between 1 and 3 mm in diameter, and their black color is caused by the oxidation of sebum blocking the sebaceous duct in the open air.

Papules: When blackheads turn into inflamed lesions, they are invaded by the acne-specific bacterium Cutibacterium acne. They can measure between 1 and 4 millimeters, are often surrounded by a red halo and are often painful.

-Pustules: When a papule's infection worsens, it becomes a pustule. Pustules are filled with infected white or yellow fluid, which may drain away or migrate deeper into the skin. They then form nodules or cysts.

Cystic acne: This is the most severe and difficult-to-treat form of acne, since the comedo is enclosed in a deep fibrous shell. Attempts to pierce them manually are not only ineffective, but can leave long-term marks.
